<image:caption>I started Reach Essays in 2021. My bestselling campus novel TO HAVE & HAVE MORE examines the high-pressure world of prep school—and how such pressure can erode integrity. My take on ChatGPT and admissions essays appeared in New York magazine and my thoughts on over-advising appear in Air Mail. Read more about me here. Please note: I only take on a handful of students and I only work on personal essays. I do not help with supplemental (“why school”) essays.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Do I think the Common App essay is the single greatest genre in American literature? Absolutely. Here’s an elliptical version of my bio: I was born on a rainy Friday in Boston. I studied hard and got good grades. After college I lived in California. Here’s the elaborated version of my bio: School admissions have played a pivotal role in my life ever since I was three years old, when I succeeded in solving a puzzle to gain admission into the lab school at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where I grew up. I’m a proud graduate of two boarding schools (Eaglebrook School and Milton Academy), as well as the University of Chicago, where I majored in Anthropology and was admitted to the Phi Beta Kappa society as an early inductee. I studied creative writing at UC Berkeley and the University of Arkansas before earning my MFA from The New School in 2020, at which point I began working as an admissions consultant. Since then I’ve helped hundreds of students to gain admission into schools like Harvard, Columbia, UChicago, and other outstanding institutions from up and down the US News and World Report rankings. I’m passionate about working with young adults, and specifically about helping my students to better understand and communicate the qualities that make them unique. On top of my consulting work I am also a writer, with a novel-in-progress and writings published in The Brooklyn Rail. If you found me on TikTok, way to click through. We don’t read/reply to comments so you’re much more likely to find helpful information on this site. (Hint: check out sample essays.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Partners - Hi, I’m Jerry.</image:title>
<image:caption>Nothing motivates me quite like the challenge of reach school. Here’s the milquetoast version of my bio: I graduated as valedictorian of my high school, went to Yale, then worked as a product manager at companies like Google and an artificial intelligence lab. After a 7 year career in tech, I left to go to film school. The nuanced version goes like this: Even though I went to a competitive STEM high school that deprioritized the arts, I knew my love for performing and storytelling was my greatest asset. Instead of pigeonholing myself in a STEM discipline, I opted for a Computer Science and Art joint major at Yale that exercised both my left and right brain. However, my pragmatism (instilled at a young age) misled me to a career in tech, where I languished in endless meetings questioning if this would be the rest of my life. A deep dissatisfaction (and a FaceTime with Sanibel) convinced me to do the unthinkable: quit my coveted position and move to Chicago to study comedy and filmmaking at the Second City. Writing scripts and producing short films galvanized my creative spirit and I channel this energy into supporting students as a college essay coach. My specialty is using storytelling to inject personality into (otherwise bland) essays and sell the unquantifiable parts of your personality. My work has been selected to screen at The American Pavilion Emerging Filmmakers Showcase at Cannes Film Festival and Wicked Queer: Boston’s LGBTQ+ Film Festival. <image:title>Transfer Applicants - The Transfer Essay</image:title>
<image:caption>We’ll help you find the best way to present your decision to transfer. This requires crafting an explanation that avoids sounding whiny, and concisely explaining why your current institution cannot meet your needs. The Transfer Essay is not set up like the Common App essay (so you can’t reuse it, but you may recycle parts of it). Both the prompt and the word count will vary from school to school. Schools ask variations of the same question: Why are you transferring? (What’s wrong with your current college?) Why are you transferring to our school? (How will our institution serve you better than your current institution? What do we offer that your current college doesn’t offer?) What do you hope to achieve by transferring? (What opportunities are you unable to create for yourself at your current college?) You will need to make sure that your reason(s) for transferring do not point to you as the problem. If you claim that you don’t like the community at your school, you must prove that you exhausted every avenue of seeking out community. If you claim that the arts program at your school is inadequate, this should be substantiated by efforts that you made that were unsupported by your college. Don’t make the mistake of saying that you want to transfer from School A to School B because School B has a great psych program—but you’ve failed to do your research and your current school is actually world-renowned for their psych program.</image:caption>

<image:title>Graduate School Applicants - Graduate School Applicants</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re an aspiring graduate student who needs help with a Statement of Purpose or a Personal Statement, you’re in the right place. I’ve worked with students applying to business school, medical school, MFAs, and public policy programs. The statement structure varies from discipline to discipline, but the general guidelines are the same: demonstrate fluency in and enthusiasm for your field. Your statement should not be overly narrative (sharing too much of your non-academic life), but it should include a storytelling arc. I will help you build structure into your statement so the essay flows intuitively. You’ll furnish the subject expertise and I’ll help you make certain it comes across as well-informed, open-minded, and curious. We’ll work together to showcase the relevant combination of academic ability, experience, and personality.</image:caption>
